Artist's Comments

8"x 10" watercolor on archival watercolor paper.

Original available, double matted and elegantly framed.

Sometimes a person can be feeling dark, even when the surrounding appear to be so bright. She is one of those people.

This is the 4th in the 100 theme challenge. Dark was a hard one for me because my art always ends up so colorful. Instead, her emotion is dark. She is left empty. The two birds are a hint of why.

ooo, kewl, we should do a 1000 theme challenge, lol...
:iconbryancollins:
I don't know if I could make it to 1000! I actually just use the themes when I am suffering from artist's block. The challenge really jump starts my imagination. Thanks for having a look, and for adding her to your favorites!

well , this echoes back to Deliberation of Poignancy - sadness in the midst of beauty .

the image is much cleaner (lighter , less complex - what the heck am I trying to say here) than your other work but still the strong sense of color . the face is great (too effective in it's sadness , but a great face none the less) , as is the image on the shirt

the yellow is about 1/2 a click to bright for my tastes but the way you added the yellow tones to the face is wonderful detail .

hard not to draw some illusion to a heavenly halo - is this part of your intent or am I just seeing things ?

whatever device keeps you working past the block is a success in my eyes

I think the bright colors really set off her somber expression. I like your interpretation of the dark theme. :D
:iconbryancollins:
The halo effect you mention was deliberate. I wanted it to subtly resemble the nimbus you often see around Mary in Catholic art. As far as the intensity of the yellow, it's probably the photo. I had to boost the contrast a bit so that all the lighter tones would show up on a computer, so the more vibrant tones are now glowing like neon! Thank you for the in-depth analysis. I do appreciate it.

Thank you. I was doing to do a piece mostly in black, but I committed to doing the entire 100 themes in watercolor, and it's hard to get intense dark colors with watercolor, so I had to go the conceptualism route. Glad you like her!
